Kumiai

Here we have artwork attributed to the Kumiai, the first known inhabitants indigenous to the Northern Baja peninsula, and parts of Southern California. We are connected in that the raw bar at Leña Brava offers local Baja oysters named after the Kumiai, and many of our chefs’ techniques, such as wood fire cooking, date back many thousands of years. And similar to my own interpretation of some of the cave paintings below, the overall “Los Surfos” archival project intends to remember, honor and respect the hard work of people before the present time. I was also inspired by John Steinbeck, the Field Museum, surfing photos, and the warm-blooded moonfish.
