I can’t say enough about Philippe- a top old time spot. How old time? If you were the best meat carving lady at Philippe for a hundred years there are still ladies who could potentially carved longer. The orders are placed at the counter. The person who takes your order carves your meat- in our case the sweetest older lady. She carved the meat. She French dipped. It’s an older clientele plus foot traffic. Unexplained strawdust underfoot. She gave Etta a small blue bow for her hair.

I took my yelp friend Steph C.’s recommendation on a traditional beef and American cheese French dip and a lamb and blue cheese one. Steph C. said it best- “This was gamey to the point of being pungent, the tender meat full of lamb flavor. The chunks of crumbly blue cheese were a great counterpoint.” I loved the original French dip too. The potato salad and the banana cream pie were excellent.
