As the Crispness Intensifies, the Coats are Growing Heavier — November 6, 2021

ULC Logbook, Saturday, November 6th, 2021:

Dinner: We started with approx. 130 covers. In the Ballroom, we had the wedding ceremony and dinner for Sarah and Gregory; in the Sherman Room we had the Janis A. birthday celebration dinner; in the Clubroom we had the Nurs S. birthday celebration dinner. We made up for a few cancellations with several walk-in’s at 5PM, and the more than 10 guests who joined us at the bar, to finish with 125 covers.

Dinner BA’s: Angharad R. (party of 2, tbl. 16, married here in 2019); Michael M. (party of 4, tbl. 1); Jeff Z. (party of 2, tbl. 15); former ULC pastry chef and good friend of R. and whole team, Chef K. (party of 2, at the bar).

Lunch: We served 43 covers. For BA’s, we were joined by Benedict C. (party of 1, tbl. 23); Melinda S. (party of 2, tbl. 4); Adil C. (solo at the bar).

A married couple who travelled from Florida to attend the wedding were waiting for their ride in the entry and I invited them to keep warm inside, and had them wait at the banquette at table 1 so they could keep an eye on their soon-to-be-arriving driver. They said the wedding was beautiful and their dinner was “absolutely fabulous.”

Dr. Thomas S. (party of 3, tbl. 26) graduated from Yale, and started dining here 30 years ago. His daughter is currently completing the MD program at Yale. Dining at ULC is a multi-generational family tradition. Dr. S. said the cuisine and hospitality tonight had been, “superb, absolutely superb.”

In my book, A. was tonight’s MVP: R. said in hindsight he would have scheduled a second bartender. For the second night in a row, the bar was full throughout, and A. was so fast it was already like having 2 bartenders. AND the guests at the bar clearly had great experiences. Bravo A.!

A beautiful sunny Saturday that turned chilly after dark. As the crispness intensifies, the coats are growing heavier.
