Hamburger Security

Late one night, after I told her about the extinction of large, defenseless sea cows, on both of America’s coasts, by the hands of human beings, Effie put on a song I had never heard before, “Dying on the Vine,” by John Cale. The fragments of sentences have been rearranged, William Burroughs-style. When John Cale sings, “I was living my life like a Hollywood, but I was dying on the vine,” he is only making sense to folks who know of the street corner in Los Angeles.

“I’ve been chasing ghosts and I don’t like it. I wish someone would show me where to draw the line. I’d lay down my sword if you would take it. And tell everyone back home I’m doing fine.”

As I ride my bike to work on these fall days, I have been listening to a lot of tracks from the Gloaming, by Radiohead, an album inspired by fear of future and feelings of powerlessness. To create the album’s cover art, artist Stanley Donwood made lists of words and phrases drawn from roadside advertising in Los Angeles. In bottom right corner, are the words from the title of this post.

Wickman House Part 2

I don’t like traveling to places, no matter how beautiful or amazing the attractions of place may be, with bad food. That’s why I love Wisconsin in general, and Door County in particular. The state has rich food history kept alive in fish boils and supper clubs. Wickman House nods to the past and does its thing in the here and now.

This visit Etta again loved her cocktail. The grounds have been made even more beautiful. It was busy at the end of their dinner service on Monday night: I can only imagine that its the place to be on a weekend night. Its hard to beat the ambience of an old country home at the end of peninsula, the final gathering place before Death’s Door.

We had the ribeye, a salad of locally sourced vegetables, and the lobster BLT. For dessert, peanut butter ice cream with dark chocolate tuile. Wickman House respects the past, offering the supper club standard prime rib on Saturday nights this summer (my girlfriend desperately wants it,) with all the updates a restaurant would need to succeed in competitive market, like Chicago. From the craft cocktails, local beer, sourcing the food from family farms and preparing it well, to the style of the service and the rustic vibes, I’m a big fan.

Hearthstone Bistro Part 2

We were returning to another fond memory of a dinner we had at Hearthstone Bistro a couple summers ago. The Hearthstone, in operation for decades, lived up to its reputation as the best restaurant in the Muskegon / Grand Haven area.

The soups are particularly good: Etta had a lobster bisque with rich aroma and flavor balanced by acidity. I had the Wisconsin cheese soup, the buttery cheesy base accented by crunchy light cheese puffs.

Steak frites draw them in and for good reason, the cut was tender and well seasoned. I also enjoyed the bread pudding with creme anglaise for dessert, featuring Michigan fruit. We sat out on the patio and got to watch the sun duck storm clouds on its descent to the lake.

I Love The Place

Many folks call Memorial Day the unofficial start of summer. On the Connecticut Shore, summer starts the first time you eat at The Place in Guilford, an outdoor restaurant specializing in wood-grilled local seafood, vegetables and more since 1971. I had my first dinner of the year at The Place on Memorial Day, so count it both ways.

Aunty and I started with 18 bbq roasted clams, the best clams I’ve ever had. These were juicy, spicy and salty, their liquor kissed by the fire’s smoke.

I don’t know if I was over tired or just really hungry but the catfish in hobo pack was the best fish I’ve had at The Place. It was well seasoned and cooked to perfect, sweet, light and flaky, in citrus and butter. I always love the bluefish cooked that way too, but that catfish was something else.

The last time I had steak at The Place it was sinewy: I think it may have been flank. Tonight my aunt ordered the ribeye: I wasn’t expecting anything special. The Place’s ribeye blew me away, perfect medium rare, tender, full of flavor. Look at the picture!

The key lime pie, forget about it. I don’t mean to drop so many superlatives in one review, but this may have been the best all time dinner at my favorite all time restaurant. To use an off color simile, maybe it’s like masturbation: the longer you wait, the better it feels! After mother nature’s brutality this past winter, I really needed The Place to turn the page to summer.

Lawry’s The Prime Rib

For her 30th birthday I took my meat-loving lady to Lawry’s, a classic dining room housing the city of Chicago’s finest prime rib. She squealed at first sight of the meat cart.

My favorite part of the meal was the meat itself. Soft, rich, perfectly pink and juicy in an indescribably addicting rich meat gravy with super soft mashed potatoes. I cleaned my plate.

Etta got a much bigger portion of prime rib, called the Diamond Jim Brady cut. Her favorite part of the experience was the service. Our server, in old fashioned uniform with a bow on the back, was gracious and informative. The busser was amazingly efficient and did things that I did not think were possible, like cleaning and crumbing the table of forty seven different things in ten seconds. It was a deliciously old school meaty experience!

Marty’s Place North, Part 2

The day after “the indoor waterpark” incident I was still really shook up. I felt like I had been in a war: bruises on my elbow to my wrist, water lodged near my brain, ringing in my ears, fatigue.

We drove to the Northwoods and had dinner at one of our favorite Wisconsin supper clubs: Marty’s Place North.

Located in Arbor Vitae, Marty’s Place North was slowly filling up at 5PM on a Friday (it felt like midnight to me!) in January.

The horseradish cheese, lake trout, steak with blue cheese butter, and strawberry schaum tort were all better than ever. We even bought a container of cheese and crackers to take home.

The place was packed by the time we retreated back to the safety of our TV and fireplace at the Black Bear Lodge.
