On this year’s Day of the Dead altar former Topolobampo Maitre D Larry remembers his partner Brent, who was a chef at the restaurant. Brent passed away in 1992 at the age of 35.

In the photo over Larry’s shoulder, Brent is seen on one of the staff trips to Mexico, “haggling” with an artisan over a beautiful handmade rug. “I don’t care how much it costs, we have to get this rug,” Larry remembers Brent announced in front of the craftspeople.

One of Brent’s poems was printed as a memorial: “My life may be made of circumstance, but I choose what I notice about it. And what there is of significance is wonder and beauty and love… may you choose what you notice, always.”
