“Smuggler’s House,” “Speak Softly Shop,” “Speakeasy” — May 7, 2022

ULC Logbook, Saturday, May 7th, 2022:

We started with 97 covers. A party of 4, and a party of 2, were same-day cancellations (R. is aware). We were joined by walk-in guests at 7:20PM, and a party of 4 for desserts-only at 8:30PM. We finished with 97 guests.

For BA’s, we were joined by: Michael M. (party of 2, tbl. 1); Christopher W. (party of 2, tbl. 22); Joseph A. (party of 2, tbl. 8); Aviva B. (party of 4, tbl. 13); Marc W. (party of 2, tbl. 20); John D. (party of 2, tbl. 14); Dr. M. A. (party of 2, tbl. 6); Matthew S. (party of 2, tbl. 35); Helen Z. (party of 3, tbl. 3); Eileen M. (party of 6, tbl. 16); Catherine L. (party of 6, tbl. 5, loved Chef T.’s specially ordered cake!)

At lunchtime in the Ballroom, we were joined by approx. 33 guests (not included in total covers) for Brigitte G.’s baby shower.

We accepted a same-day reservation for Joseph A. (party of 2, tbl. 8, served by J.-M. M.) after he said over the phone that he was a member of the New Haven Police Dept. After dinner, in the vestibule, Mr. A. said that he and his wife had a great dinner, clapped his arm around my shoulder, brought me in close, and conspiratorially growl-whispered that there have been reports of a Prohibition-style “speakeasy” operating without a liquor license somewhere along the ULC’s block of Chapel Street, and I kept my mouth shut.

Sunday: cloudy, high of 57F, with 100 percent chance of mothers. Monday: mostly sunny, high of 66F.
