An Alternate Ending to the Disney Film, “The Incredible Journey,” Where the Old Dog Doesn’t Make It — September 24, 2022

ULC Logbook, Saturday, September 24th, 2022:

We started with 150 covers (122 inside, 28 outside). The patio was open, with the heaters turned up from the beginning of service onwards. Three parties cancelled, for a total loss of 6 covers. We were joined by the following walk-in parties: 2 at 5:10PM (patio); 2 at 5:15PM (Clubroom); 2 at 6:30PM; 2 at 7:10PM (bar); 2 at 7:45PM (bar); 2 at 8PM (bar). We finished with 170 guests (142 inside, 28 outside).

There was one order for takeout, another 3-course dinner for two, placed by phone for Aaron F., (the same guest who ordered yesterday for the first time).

For BA’s, we were joined by: Robert V., history enthusiasts celebrating their recent engagement (party of 2, tbl. 60); James D. (party of 6, tbl. 3); the E.’s (party of 2, tbl. 78); Meghan G. (party of 5, tbl. 76); David F., celebrated his and his wife’s birthdays, joined us for the first time (party of 2, tbl. 4); Donna C., showing off New Haven by bringing their guest to the ULC for the first time (party of 3, tbl. 13); Norman L. (party of 6, tbl. 17); Sharon K. (party of 2, tbl. 27); Vikram M. (party of 7, tbl. 5); Dr. H. C. (party of 2, tbl. 81); Wendy C. (party of 8, tbl. 30); Geralyn B. (party of 4, tbl. 9); Neal K. (party of 3, tbl. 35); Helen and Mr. Z. (party of 2, tbl. 17) whose daughter joined just for dessert: Jill D. (party of 2, tbl. 6), who had their rehearsal dinner at the ULC on Dec. 16th, 2021.

Email received from the B.’s (party of 4, tbl. 9, served by S.) which is my fault for not following through after checking on this with S. I will learn from how this happened and this will not happen again: “Hi, I would like to express my disappointment in our birthday dinner this evening. I had a very clear conversation with your restaurant regarding a special dessert for our birthday guest and there was no follow through, no special presentation from the pastry chef as offered. Great dinner and then waiting for the surprise and it didn’t happen. Extremely disappointed.”

Email sent to the B.’s: “Thank you all for joining us at the Union League Cafe tonight — Saturday, September 24th, 2022. Unfortunately our team had a miscommunication regarding the special celebratory mission. Chef T. had prepared your dessert plate in honor of T.’s birthday, featuring the family’s golden retriever Hudson, which did not make it to your table. Please allow us to share at least the image with you through email. Thank you again for celebrating with us tonight and we wish T. a fantastic birthday, and the B.’s family (including Hudson!) an awesome weekend!”

The K.’s (party of 2, tbl. 27, served by R.) thanked the entire team for a lovely experience.

CF observed guests’ faces at multiple tables literally lighting up with delight when biting into Chef T.’s blueberry petit-fours: bravo Chef T. and team pastry!

Sunday: isolated thunderstorms; high of 74F; 30% chance of rain. Monday: mostly sunny; high of 74F; 10% chance of rain. Tuesday: partly cloudy; high of 72F; 0% chance of rain.

Last night Danny L. said that, “Jose the Party DJ,” who does WEBE 108’s amazing disco mixes on Saturday nights, will be going on 6-month hiatus while training to become a 9-11 operator (bravo to Jose!) — BUT Mr. L. said not to worry, Jose the Party DJ has 6 months of shows pre-recorded so we won’t miss a beat. Have a great weekend!
