ULC Logbook, Wednesday, September 28th, 2022:
We started with 68 covers (36 inside, 18 outside, 14 in the Sherman Room). One party of 4 cancelled: this was the Yale reservation where their guest of honor, visiting from Germany, had a severe gluten allergy: evidently the honored guest arrived from Germany early today, ate lunch at another restaurant in New Haven, was served gluten by accident, and ended up too gluten-sickened to join us for dinner — a total loss of 4 covers. We were joined by the following walk-in parties: 2 at 5:10PM (dinner in the Clubroom); 2 at 5:15PM (dinner at the bar); 15 at 5:15PM (a Yale professor treated his students to drinks and apps in the Clubroom); 1 at 6:35PM (dinner on the patio). We finished with 76 guests (41 inside, 21 outside, 14 in the Sherman Room).
Tonight’s limit of 80 covers was reached just after 7PM, at which point we closed online reservations. By 7:40PM we became aware that a guest had erroneously reserved a table for 4 tonight, but had intended to reserve for tomorrow night: online reservations were resumed.
For BA’s, we were joined by: Yale’s Elizabethan Club (party of 7, tbl. 77+); Joan D., celebrating friend Jane’s birthday (party of 3, tbl. 1); Didi M. (party of 5, tbl. 5); Marilyn C., celebrating 45th anniversary (party of 4, tbl. 3); Jan C. and H. (party of 2, tbl. 63); Melinda S. (party of 2, tbl. 11); Marc W. with his friend who is a chef (party of 2, tbl. 17); Edward S. (party of 2, tbl. 6); Yale Medicine’s Dr. G. D. (party of 9, tbl. 76+); B. P. (party of 4, tbl. 26); Yale Medicine following the T.-G. Lecture (party of 6, tbl. 16); the A.’s, who were married at the ULC exactly 20 years ago today (party of 2, tbl. 13).
In the Sherman Room, we were contracted for 14 guests from the CM Group / Genentech.
Melinda S. (party of 2, tbl. 11, served by R.) commented on how lovely their dinner was, and may have also used their comments as an opening to inquire about R., which was understandable, even though G. and I were currently available to offer our own statuses. We told the S.’s that he was in the office working on administrative duties, and offered to reach out to R. to come say hello. The S.’s declined, and requested we pass along, to R., their thanks for a wonderful night, and that they look forward to joining all of us, but mostly R., again very soon. As true professionals, G. and I quickly recovered from perhaps feeling a little like chopped liver compared to R.! Bravo to R. (per the S.’s), R., Chef G., Chef J., Chef T., and the entire team!
Marc W. (party of 2, tbl. 17, served by J. D.), owner of ONTHEMARC Catering (for whom J. D. was once employed!) reported that he and the executive chef of his company enjoyed a, “delightful,” dinner tonight, and look forward to joining us again soon. Bravo to J. D., Chefs, and team!
Tonight’s co-MVP award, in my book anyway, goes to S. and M., who proved all summer long, and again tonight, that they are the undisputed queens of the ULC patio: bravo to S. and M.!
Thursday: mostly sunny; high of 70F; 10% chance of rain. Friday: mostly cloudy; high of 67F; 0% chance of rain. Saturday: showers; high of 62F; 60% chance of rain.
