A 52nd Anniversary / “Dancing on the Ceiling,” by Lionel Richie — September 13 – 15, 2022

ULC Logbook, Tuesday, September 13th, 2022:

We started with 81 covers (the total includes 24 guests from the Sherman Room party). Due to the forecast for rain, the patio was closed before the start of service. One party cancelled, from the Yale School of Management, for a loss of 12 covers. We were joined by the following walk-in parties: 1 at 5PM (dinner at the bar); 2 at 6:20PM (for drinks only, in the Clubroom); 2 at 7:30PM (dinner at the bar); 2 at 8:10PM. We finished with 92 guests (the total includes 24 guests from the Sherman Room party).

We had one order for takeout (2 apps, 2 entrees, 2 desserts, and a side) for Lama G. at 6:30PM, ordered by phone.

For BA’s, we were joined by: Dr. S. K. (party of 3, tbl. 17); Dr. E. F. (party of 5, tbl. 3); Prof. G. H. (solo, tbl. 7); Zinc GM Michael and Mrs. E. (party of 2, tbl. 4), celebrating anniversary; Stephen K. (party of 2, tbl. 11); John and Mrs. H. (party of 2, tbl. 13) whose daughter paid the check in honor of their 52nd anniversary; Dr. P. J. G., of Yale Medicine (party of 8, tbl. 31+); J. M., of Yale Law (party of 5, tbl. 5); Dr. W. G. (party of 5, tbl. 16) of Yale Psychiatry; P. L. and S. H. In the Sherman Room, we were joined by 24 guests from Yale’s William F. Buckley Jr. program.

Tilden R. (party of 2, tbl. 2, served by D.) celebrated a birthday at the ULC tonight. After dinner, when I inquired about their experience, Mrs. R. commented: “Everything was EXCELLENT, and I even have a doggie bag to look forward to at home.” Mr. R. then commented: “We always have to come here: it’s the best.” Bravo to D., Chef G., Chef J., Chef T., and the entire team!

N. called out.

J. staged for a support position with M. in the busser station.

R. I. mistakenly ordered the vegetarian Goat Cheese Tortellini instead of the vegetarian Swiss Chard Barbajuan for a vegetarian guest; Chef G., R., and G. worked together for the service recovery.

ULC Logbook, Wednesday, September 14th, 2022:

We started with 53 covers (42 inside, 11 outside). Three parties cancelled for a total loss of 7 covers. We were joined by the following walk-in parties: 1 at 5:20PM (patio); 1 at 5:45PM (at the bar, drinks only); 1 at 5:55PM; 3 at 6PM; 2 at 6:40PM (patio); 3 at 8PM (sending an appreciation to E. for her assistance seating this party while I was taking an order for takeout over the phone). The patio reservation originally for 7 guests turned into a party of 9; the Clubroom reservation originally for 14 guests turned into a party of 9. We finished with 58 guests (42 inside, 16 outside).

It was an all desserts day for takeout: one order for 4 desserts, over the web; one order for 1 dessert, over the phone.

For BA’s, we were joined by: Lorenzo C. (party of 9, tbl. 75+); B. G. (party of 5, tbl. 5) with Yale’s Elizabethan Club; the honorable Professor B. (solo, tbl. 78); Jack C. In the Clubroom, we were joined by 9 guests from F3 Technology Partners, hosted by D. W. M. The party was originally contracted for 14 guests with a RALC menu; after the number of guests changed to 9, and due to their enthusiasm for wine, we offered the full a la carte menu, which made the guests happy.

Email received from A. H., the daughter that took care of the check for her parents’ anniversary dinner on Tuesday, Sept. 13 (tbl. 13, party of 2, served by R.):

“Thank you! My parents had a wonderful time, and they especially appreciated the custom dessert wishing them a happy 52nd anniversary! I know it will be a night to remember. Thank you to everyone at UL who made their evening so special. All the best, A.”

Bravo to Chef T., R., Chef G., Chef J., and the whole team!

Lindsey M. (party of 2, tbl. 9, served by R.) were a British couple dining at the ULC for the first time. After dinner, Ms. M. commented: “Gorgeous, lovely, beautiful food, and our server was an absolute delight.” Bravo to R., Chef J., Chef T., Chef J., G., E. and the entire team!

The sorbets (which may be different by now) tonight were: apple cider, cranberry, pear, blood orange, and lemon vanilla. Amazing sorbet flavors; bravo to Chef T.!

New Haven’s historian of note / my personal hero, Colin C., dropped off a poster for the New Haven Grand Prix’s “Apizza Feast,” which will be displayed at the front desk, (beside the plate of business cards,) until Friday, per C. F.

S. reported that of the 25 napkins folded for use on the patio, only 13 met the standard to be used: the remainder were adapted for wine service.

ULC Logbook, Thursday, September 15th, 2022:

We started with 53 covers (25 inside, 13 outside, 15 in the Sherman Room party). Four parties cancelled, for a total loss of 10 covers. The I-91 highway was completely closed this evening, due to a pile-up, and all vehicular traffic was re-routed through New Haven, delaying many of our guests’ arrival. We were joined by the following walk-in parties: 1 at 6:45PM (at the bar, drinks only); 2 at 7:10PM; 2 at 7:40PM, later joined by a 3rd guest, just for dessert). We finished with 70 guests (42 inside, 13 outside, 15 in the Sherman Room party).

We had one order of takeout, placed by web, for the honorable Professor B.

For BA’s, we were joined by: Barry M. (party of 4, tbl. 3); H. B. (party of 3, tbl. 17) from Yale’s French department; K. M. (party of 6, tbl. 75+) of Medtronic; C. G. (party of 2, tbl. 2) of Yale Law School; Frank and Mrs. M. (party of 2, tbl. 21).

In the Sherman Room, we were contracted for 15 guests from Bristol Meyers Squib (less than the full 15 guests were able to make it; the guests who did were offered some of the remaining food to take home, which they declined.)

The lady in the stylish hat with H. B. (party of 3, tbl. 17, served by R. I.) — I’m guessing this may be Mrs. B. but do not wish to presume — was on her way out, and had made it half-way into the vestibule, when she turned to me and commented: “We were waited on by the most magical, charming man tonight!” Bravo to R. I.!

M. L. L. left her CC behind on the patio. It’s labeled in the lockbox, she is aware, and will pick it up on Saturday.

R. I. had a small service hiccup that was corrected by G.

Maximum covers for Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday of next week are posted in the manager closet.

I messaged the Saturday, Oct. 1st reservations, and requested they contact the restaurant to join us on another date.

Friday: sunny; high of 77F; 100% chance of cyclists. Changing gears (see what I did there?) … Saturday; partly cloudy; high of 76F; 2% chance of precipitation.

The following scene, about the fate of a man’s shoes when a manure spreader jack-knife’s on the highway — meaning the trailer of the manure spreader turned perpendicular to the cab, causing the truck to violently flip-over, spreading manure everywhere, and triggering a pile-up of additional crashing vehicles —  from, “Fletch,” the 1985 comedy / detective classic starring Chevy Chase, sums up my standard response when a late guest arrives complaining about how bad the traffic was:
