Nick’s Nest, Holyoke, Mass.

This past summer Raven and I dined at two restaurants in Western Massachusetts that have been open for so many years that my grandparents had actually dined there back when they were dating in their youth: the Student Prince and Nick’s Nest. And what I learned is that both of these badass places have been stayin’ alive by the strength of their unique and delicious offerings, upon which nostalgia is just the mustard on the dog.

This paragraph is for hotdog lovers. Coming from somebody who loves roadfood in general, hotdogs in specific, and has a laser-like focus on eating hotdogs, for a decade in Chicago, and two plus decades on the East Coast: you have to go to Nick’s Nest for the hotdog. The Nick’s Nest dog is has a unique golden buttery umami-ful flavor profile, with a gentle snap, on toasted bun, that’s in complete harmony with their signature chili.

The cheese fries are awesome. What else is there to say? Nick’s Nest is old school counter service. The speed of the hotdogs means although you are able to eat for a full meal, the efficiency may make it feel more like a snack. I’m not a doctor, but I would prescribe at least a minute of breathing deeply after each hotdog is ingested, to allow the brain to best absorb the gentle snap of hotdog satisfaction.

Superdawg Equinox

On the equinox, Raven and I drove up to the drive-in and she had her first Superdawg. It was a beautiful Sunday evening, the start of spring.

Afterwards we stopped at the last large newstand in the city, and browsed magazines. We worked up enough appetite to share fresh cut French fries and a milkshake at Susie’s on the way home.

Mythical Beasts

I am no longer with rage quit: I have joined Mythical Beasts. Thank you alpacino and beav for having me on your team for the past few months. I am excited to move forward with mb and together we may be able to accomplish some of my long term goals (rail housefly).

If anyone is interested, my player name for mb is going to be hu1tz1. The mythical beast is Huitzilopochtli, the Aztec god of war and the sun. In legend hu1tz1 was born fully grown, in full armor and headshotted his sister immediately upon exiting the womb.

Hummingbirds are badass warriors who can fly backwards, upside down and hover, and to do so they must consume half their body weight in sugar every day. For a human being of my weight, that would mean over 1100 cans of Coke. Hu1tz1 was said to be in a constant struggle with the darkness and required nourishment in the form of sacrifices… giblets!

Utopian Experience

I am focused on turning my promise of, “2015 the year of the teeth,” into a reality. The clock is counting down but I am on a mission, with dental appointments as far as the eye can see. Next week, my sister is flying in from LA to be on hand for the extraction of my final wisdom teeth.

This week I got my first root canal. I know myself well enough to know that I am a big talker (maybe not as well known, but I also consider myself a good listener!) At the root canal office, I had a lot of questions for the doctor and her assistant. And I was nervous. I could feel their energy totally improve when they finally jammed all the equipment into my mouth, preventing any more squawking.

I am pushing myself to complete one big exercise a week. This past weekend I went for a 20 mile round trip bike ride to Superdawg for a hotdog. On the 10 mile ride out, I was shaky from lack of conditioning and food. I was starved by the time I reached Superdawg and had to get 2 hotdogs. On the 10 mile return trip, my sodium levels spiked dramatically, and I momentarily turned into a hotdog myself.

As a lover of hot dogs and macaroni and cheese, Jordan’s Hot Dogs and Mac caught my attention. It looked good on paper, but how does that combination actually taste? Amazing.

I met my friend Ray who works down the street for lunch. If I worked down the street, I could see myself having lunch here at least twice a month. What can I say: I love hotdogs and mac!

RIP Superdawg

My favorite hotdog in the world. Having a Superdawg on a beautiful Sunday in May is like a spiritual experience for me!

Today I drove my 3 friends to Anime Central in Rosemont and we had a Sunday late morning pitstop at Superdawg.   It was my first anime convention and he first time eating at Superdawg for Ramon and Gabriel.

Ramon had a Super Chick and loves the BBQ sauce. His big little brother Alfredo had a Whoopsie Cheese and immediately craved another. Gabriel had a Superfish.  Alfredo remarked how cool it was that Superdawg has been continuously operated by Maurie and Flaurie and their family since just after World War 2. superdawg maurie flaurie rip acen anime central godzilla gabriel ruiz ramon eymar flores 3rdarm arthur mullen  

In the afternoon we heard the news: Maurie, founder of Superdawg, passed away this morning.  He was 89.  Thank you Maurie for the world’s best hotdog. My pure beef heart goes out to your wife Flaurie and the family.

Super Tortadawg

You would think I would have had my share of tortas already- but no! I always eat at this Tortas Frontera (and the one in Terminal 1) when I fly out of O’Hare. Tortas were built for this kind of energetic environment, and with all the thousands of passersby they practically sell themselves on sight and smell alone. The fact is they live up to the reputation of the Chef.

My favorite part of Tortas Frontera is that it’s always changing and exciting. During this visit I had a sweet and savory that weren’t on the menu just a few weeks ago. The chefs special was an amazing torta albondigas. Spicy, smoky, acidic and most importantly, meaty! For dessert, we tried Lucila’s Chicago-made alfajores- crumbly Argentinean cookies sandwiching soft and sweet goat’s milk caramel.

Tortas Frontera has some of the best tortas I’ve ever had, and the dynamic style of service perfectly suits one of the most bustling airports in the country.

Rabiosa

Saturday evening, a group of extremely drunk and obnoxiously loud young ladies entered Xoco. The host Saul explained the system and offered them the first available seats. At the counter, I apologized for the awkward situation and said we would only serve them food, not more drinks. I let them know to blame me, it was my decision. Already steaming over being cut off, they boiled over when they got to the counter. The borrachas attacked me in the middle of the dining room, red-faced in anger and yelling. My friend Stephen, a music producer who uses a motorized scooter, defended me. He said they were ruining guests’ dinner. They attacked him. We refunded the ladies money and they left, furious. The part of the group that had arrived separately, and had not spent the day drunk, we moved to a table. We did our best to give them a great dining experience.
